Ready, Set, Rogue (Studies in Scandal #1) by Manda Collins
2 1/2 star rating
Often the first book in a new series either completely draws the reader in or sets up the upcoming books in the series; for me it was the latter. I was hooked during the opening scene at the inn between Ivy and Quill. I hoping it stayed on the path of barbs and banter but that ended as soon as the murder mystery began. Their romance got lost in the shuffle of finding the killer. At that point more time was given to Daphne and Maitland' s budding romance, which although I am excited about, but it took away from Ivy and Quill.

Campbell's Redemption (Highland Pride #3)  by Sharon Cullen
3 star rating
I have been anticipating Iain Campbell's story since book one in the series. His secretive persona that neither the Scottish or English could trust was intriguing and came to a head in this story. While I liked the type of woman he was matched with in Cait Campbell I still don't think she came close to matching his enigma. She wasn't the fierce warrior Maggie was in the previous book nor as soft as Eleanor in the first book in the series. I guess I was hoping the heroine would top them both in order to match Iain but she was just not as compelling of a character so it just fell short for me. I enjoyed the series but probably built this book up too much. The other two couples did make an appearance which was lovely but an epilogue would have been an added bonus.

Adored in Autumn (Seasons #4) by Jess Michaels
4 star rating
A similar enjoyment that I receive from each series by Michaels' is how she weaves the characters together from book to book. All the past romances come together to rescue one of their own. In a cliffhanger from the last story we find Felicity Barbridge coming to the realization that her past may come back to hurt her and her siblings. Years of an abusive marriage come to a head when she must kill or be killed. She is able to hide her act of survival until a blackmailer's book of secrets is stolen and will soon be uncovered. Coming to the rescue after his services were requested to track down the culprit, is former servant to the family, Asher Seyton.
Along the way to rediscovered love between Asher and Felicity is the wrap up of all the loose ends from the former books. While I appreciated the focus on forgiveness and putting the blame where it should lie, some characters got off a little to easy, especially Felicity' s mother. The acceptance of what lives the Asher and Felicity were pushed into was a little too utopian in feel.
I enjoyed this but none were quite as good as An Affair in Winter (Seasons #1).

Devices and Desires by Pamela Sherwood
2 star review
Often the first book in a new series can go one of two ways, either it draws you completely in to the hero and heroine or it focuses so much on setting up future novels that it gets bogged down in side characters. Unfortunately it was the latter in this book. The first 1/3 of the book was filled with getting a glimpse of every supporting character (even ones that were departed) and because of this I felt there was no connection with the main couple in Gervase Lyons and Margaret Bellamy. I completely got the point that he loved her but I think he forever remained in the friend-zone and was a mere fill in for her beloved former husband, Alex. The only character I was remotely interested in getting a happy ending was the heir apparent, Reg Lyon, but that didn't happen either. Hopefully every character is now set up and the next books will be more promising.

The Heiress and the Hothead by Sabrina Jeffries
4 star review
How I wish this was a full length novel since I loved Lord Stephen Correy and Amanda Keane, as I have all the Keane family in preceding books. While short in length the story described circumstances that made Stephen into a strong supporter of those less fortunate as an investigative writer and Amanda into a hard-working mill owner who also a heart of gold. The pacing of their growing affection somehow did not seem rushed as in most novellas. The nuisances of each character made them a perfect pair and I hope the subsequent books tell of their future endeavors together.

The Duke of Deception by Darcy Burke
3 star review
This was an overall good read. I had read the others in the series but still felt a little lost with some of the characters. Some follow-up from the previous books would have been helpful. I liked the main characters, Ned, Lord Sutton, and Aquilla enough. Ned' s story held my interest more as Aquilla's mistrust in marriage was never fully developed. Ned did live up to the moniker, The Duke of Deception, but in a completely hero-like way that was deserving of being loved and trusted.

A Night of Forever (The Disgraced Lord's #6) by Bronwen Evans

Arend Aubury and Isobel Thompson are an unlikely pair because of Arend being a fellow Libertine scholar and Isobel is the step-daughter of the main suspect plotting the demise of the group and all those they love.

Arend keeps plenty of secrets and trusts no one so when he becomes infatuated with Isobel his past comes creeping back in. Isobel received the brunt of his mistrust and I felt bad for her especially when even those she thought of as friends also held her at arms length. I had a hard time seeing her with such a frightening home life and also being not fully accepted by those she wanted to help. I enjoyed this book but wished Isobel had an easier go of it to get her happy ending.

The Danger of Desire (Sinful Suitors #3) by Sabrina Jeffries
3 1/2 star rating
I always enjoy seeing what Sabrina Jeffries weaves together and while I liked the nuisances of what made up Warren Corry, the Marquees of Knightford and Delia Trevor, the timing was a little off. At first Warren, in trying to puzzle Delia's late night rendezvous out, was full of interest in her while she held a barrier up and secrets back from him. Then after their physical chemistry got them in hot water, Delia was the detective to Warren' s childhood secrets while he kept her at an emotional distance. During both scenarios I was a little upset at the secret-keeper and especially Warren who didn't seem to care about how hurt Delia was. All that being said I still was hooked and can't wait for the next in the series that was set up so well. Like I said, Sabrina Jeffries, weaves a wonderful tale and always keeps the reader interested in what is next to come, all while devoting herself to the hero and heroine at hand.

How to Impress a Marquess (Wicked Little Secrets #3) by Suzanna Ives
5 star review
It is remarkable that similar the supporting characters in the book, how quickly I found myself charmed by all that was Lilith Dahlgren. After understanding the pain and hurt she was surrounded with all her life, I was near tears throughout the book as she kept putting herself out there and opening herself to more rejection. I finally understood how she kept opening herself to being wounded in the hope of one day belonging when she said,
"Do you really think time heals all wounds? I don't know. I think it all remains, all the love all the hurt. You will always reside in my heart, so, in truth,  I will always have a part of you".
While George was still fighting his own demons I was thankful to the side characters of Beatrice and Penelope who quickly formed a bond with Lilith, I wanted her to have that sense of belonging and both women provided that for her during the time George searched for who he was after working through his own hurts caused by his father and childhood bullies.
It was an emotionally intense story as two people had to heal so much past hurt to form a new life together that would redefine their future.

Hero: B+ (I was so Team Lilith that I had to drop him down for not seeing this jewel sooner).
Heroine: A+ (one of my favorites in a long time)
Side Characters: A (even the villains were well written but loved Penelope and Beatrice!)
Storyline: A+ (poignant)
Heat Level: B (could have been more but emotionally perfect).

The Untouchable Earl (The Fallen Ladies 2) by Amy Sandas
3 star review
I am still excited about the next book in the series but this one was just okay for me. I felt there was amazing potential that just fizzled out instead of igniting. If there was another reason for the Earl's aversion to touch or more about specifics about what made Lily Chadwick want him to overcome it, I think I would have been more enthralled.

I am not quite sure about this book that is clearly a start to a series involving the taking back of the throne by the Bastard Brotherhood. There was so much to set up and characters to be introduced to for the upcoming books that I felt a lot was lost on the connection between Torch and Calista. They came together so fast (most of which when he was incoherent from recovering from a wound inflicted by Calista) and I missed what really drew them together beyond the stone which told him they were destined. Between that, a ton of characters to keep track of and visions coming at any given time I just had to think to much to become lost in the story.

One Summer of Surrender by Jess Michaels
3 1/2 star review
I always eagerly await every new release by Jess Michaels. She consistently sets up the next story so well that you feel connected to the main characters before opening to page one. This was especially the case with Elise, the Duchess of Kirkford,  and Lucien, the Earl of Stenfax.  There had been so much of their past described and clear emotional wounds laid out in previous books that I had no idea how Michaels would heal their brokenness in this novel.
There was a lot of animosity from Lucien and his family towards Elise. She accepted it so readily because of her own misguided guilt over leaving him for the horrible Duke if Kirkford. She then had to suffer at the hands of the dead Duke' s brother, Ambrose. It was through the maneuvering of Ambrose that Lucien and Elise were reacquainted.
The depth of their past love was well described but it took a little to longer for me to believe their new feelings were as strong as the old. It seemed as though to the very end they were still trying to work out their relationship out. While the believability was there I wanted more from these two who had been through so much.

The Viscount's Mistress by Claire DuLac
5 star review
This novel was so gripping in its emotional intensity that I have a hard time believing, Claire DuLac, is a debut author. The connection developed in a youthful friendship between Gillette and Lawrewnce (Viscount of Glenrith) that was sustained through the years by hidden letters written to one another was brilliant.  The focus on the importance of the friendship they had and the desire never to lose that had me close to tears the entire story. Violette stole the show for me. She had a great life that went the way of Cinderella. The fact she remained so strong, brought about by what her parents instilled in her and the youthful hope she had in Lawrence, made her into a tough- -as-nails determined heroine.  The fact that it was Lawrence who was the one that had to rip that foundation from her (through a plan put in place by his louse of a father) was heart wrenching. I felt at one point Lawrence handled things so poorly by his unintentional verbal insults, which finally broke Violette's hard fought spirit, that I felt he didn't deserve her. Luckily throughout the story the internal dialogue of the hero and heroine kept me rooting for them. Lawrence still deserved to grovel more but that is why epilogues are always appreciated (as this one had).

Hero: B (actually A but he made me infuriated at one point)

The Legendary Lord (Playful Brides #6) by Valerie Bowman
3 1/2 star review
The humor in the first meeting between Lady Sarah Highfield and Mr. Forester (aka Viscount Berkeley) drew me in. The description of Fergus and Fergus II was hilarious! I am glad this Goldilocks-like beginning was able to capture all the wonderful qualities of the two characters.  Upon learning of Christian's elevated status and returning to London, I was disappointed that Sarah turned into such a push-over who ran when anything became difficult. The way she took charge of the circumstances surrounding her unwanted proposal was endearing but as she stuck to her parents wishes despite her obvious better options was a let down. I did love how their story concluded and was back to finding them all to be charming at the end. I also can't do without mentioning my excitement to see Lucy back in action and up to her old tricks with even more help from a great group of friends.

A Rogue to Avoid by Bianca Blythe
3 star review
The thing I have enjoyed about both this book and the previous, How to Capture a Duke, is the time spent on building a relationship/friendship. I loved the quirky humor in the previous book in the series but this had its moments. Cordelia matured rather quickly and I felt bad for the type of marriage she was planning to settle on. I was glad Gerard was as to get a look at her true character as they went out on what ended up being a long adventure.  The rising and falling action involving Cordelia' s father and henchman were not as believable and a bit over-the-top for my liking.

Her Wicked Highlander by Jennifer Haymore
4 star (novella standard) review
I must say for a novella I was impressed.  Jennifer Haymore has done a wonderful job in the previous Highland Knight series and this kept pace. Yes, the love story went from zero to sixty but that is to be expected in this genre. What doesn't always happen is the character development and what leads them to act/feel the way they do.  I fully understood the loneliness of Aila with the loss of most of the people she grew close to. Her actions with Max made sense in that regard.  The story with the villain was flushed out and later resolved in a dramatic scene with the hero and heroine both coming to one another's aid. Max' s background could have been detailed more but I think the reader got a good glimpse of his heart and motivations. Enjoyable, light read.

Hero in the Highlands by Suzanne Enoch
3 star review
Hero in the Highlands is an aptly named title. I loved Major Gabriel Forrester and the strength and fortitude he exemplified as a soldier. The element of humor from the buttons to the cow fiasco was perfect. Sadly, just as the heroine, Fiona, tried to get Gabriel lost in the bog so went the story. It was bogged down with the focus on the sheep mystery leaving the humor and romance to the wayside. By the time it picked up I didn't feel the strong romantic connection.  I wish the book title carried its weight from beginning to end.

3 1/2 star review
In a first for me I started this book without realizing it was the sixth book in a series. I feel accomplished that I overcame enough of my OCD to continue reading. Maybe it was a reward for my triumph because I did enjoy the book. The characters were well matched despite their class difference. I could have used some more groveling from Julius' after deceiving Eve by hiding the fact he was Lord Winterton. lt also bothered me at first with Julius' constant reference to Eve's beauty but after awhile I found it substantiated his likely natural traits being how he was brought up around opulence and beauty. I do feel I missed some nuisances that would have led me to enjoy the book even more by not reading the story in order but not enough to keep me from going back and starting with the first book. This will likely be a re-read only because I can't overcome my OCD that much to not finish the series from beginning to end.

My Brown-Eyed Earl by Anna Bennett
4 1/2 star review
A gem of a novel written by debut author, Anna Bennett. In a twist of fate the Earl of Castleton, William Ryder, comes to find Meg Lacey, who was once his potential spouse sitting across from him as she seeks employment as a governess for his young wards.
The interview goes horribly but Meg gets the position and soon much of the hostility is brushed aside. I appreciated that their initial bad impression of one another was quickly talked about and forgiven. I also liked that when doubt arose between the two they were almost immediately honest with their feelings. Will wore his emotions on his sleeve for Meg. He understood her reluctance to be with him but stuck with her knowing how good they could be for each other. His  persistence in his courtship was wonderful even when it went humorously bad in one of his attempts.  That same scene included Meg yelling at in of her young charges. It was so refreshing to see a heroine written exhibiting behavior that may not be considered perfect in a heroine but was so honest a reaction that it made me like and believe Meg all the more.
My only minor complaints would be that while Meg' s past was brought to light and discussed by the couple, Will' s own past with his father was only slightly referenced and never talked about as a couple. I would have loved to see Meg be a warrior for Will which I know she would have been. The story was quickly wrapped up and with that I would have liked an epilogue but those are two minor quibbles in an otherwise delightful story.

One Step Behind by Brianna Labuskes
3 star review
This was a nice start for a debut author.  My critique being that it followed a cookie-cutter formula and never rose above average. Gemma and Lucas worked came together while both searching for the same villain (who was no real mystery). Some scenes were a bit choppy and ended abruptly.  Although I liked the side story of Beatrice and Harrington, I think the story of Lucas and Gemma would have benefited with that focus solely aimed on them.

My Fair Princess (The Improper Princesses #1) by Vanessa Kelly
2 star review
When the story opens with the heroine being shot after seeking justice for the death of her step-father, I thought it started a little too far fetched but then when she talks about how she has killed before (and barely bats an eye over it) I couldn't ever be sold on the story line or Gillian, the heroine.
I liked the hero, Charles, the Duke of Leverton and thought the differences in the pair would counterbalance their relationship. This was not to be the case for while Gillian might have loosened up Charles but she made no attempt to change any if her ways for him, even if that meant putting him in danger. Eliza Doolittle, she was not. Charles might have liked/needed a little bit of her high-spiritedness at first but with time she just came off as a spoiled child who didn't mind putting others in danger if it suited her whims. While he bent more than he needed to for her, she never learned to give an inch or to trust him at all. I didn't finish the book with high hopes for their future.

Hero: B- (He didn't need to apologize so much)
Heroine: D (selfish and spoiled).  Think Nellie Oleson

Romance: C- (one-sided)

Side Characters: C- (someone along the way should have spoken up to the heroine)

When a Marquis Chooses a Bride by Ella Quinn
2 star review
To put it simply this series has thus far not had a strong enough plot to keep me engaged all the way through. The general tension is never developed in a way that make me believe there was a problem in the first place.
Dotty/Thea had Dom figured out right away. He just was raised in a bad environment but once he got a look at real life he quickly made the right decisions and changed his ways. All well and good but it doesn't make for a gripping read.

A Spring Deception (Seasons #2) by Jess Michaels
4 star review
I have to preface this review with the fact that I am a bit of a Jess Michaels fan so just she automatically starts with a 3 star review just from the excitement over the continuation of the  stories of characters I grow attached to.
I was looking forward to reading Celia' s story and while I liked it, I had higher expectations.
I don't want to give away any spoilers but I will say I thought Celia deserved more closure on some issues. I thought she had it but it never came to fruition. I can only suppose it is meant for another story line. Celia was a favorite character of mine from the previous book, An Affair in Winter. I was hoping she would be matched with someone even stronger than Gray who would have to really fight to have her love and devotion. While I liked her strength she deserved more at times from Aiden/John.
I do hope that when parts of the story finish up in subsequent books in the series (at least I hope they finish up) that Celia makes a come back to be part of it.

Highland Temptation (Highland Knights #3) by Jennifer Haymore
3 1/2 star review
While this wasn't my favorite in the series, the following line alone had me saying to a fictional character, "You go girl"!

"I love you and nothing will make me stop. Nothing. I will not let them beat us. I will slay your wretched demons, one by one if I must, but I will not let them tear you away from me, do you hear me"?

Both Colin and Emilia felt like failures yet when together their bravery came out in full force. There is nothing these two couldn't face as long as they were with each other.

The villain was horrible and it was almost too over the top but it did show why Emilia felt herself as fragile when really she was nothing of the kind.
Good book overall.

A Taste of Seduction  (The Disgraced Lords #5) by Bronwen Evans
4 star review
I really have enjoyed this series and think that any low reviews might be the result of not reading the books in order. I wouldn't say this was a stand alone series at all. To understand the characters, their love for one another and their goal of capturing the villain you have to read from book one. I loved and enjoyed the imperfection in the characters; the flaws made them more real. There was a lot of this with the relationship between Evangeline and Hadley. They both failed each other but they loved each other more and because of that it was such a touching story.

I just never felt the instant connection between Noah and Elise and therefore the story fell flat for me. I didn't read the first book in the series so it could be I was missing some element. My other problem was so much focus was spent on the characters past yet nothing was wrapped up. I was given this great back story and it went no where.

Highland Deception by Lori Ann Bailey
5 star review
I am finding it hard to believe this is a book by a debut author. It was as woven together and solidly written as some of my favorite Highland romance authors. It had everything that made it impossible to put down; treachery, betrayal, suspense, romance and love.
Maggie was a strong female character fleeing from her home in order to escape a disastrous marriage set up by her father (who did not have any redeeming qualities himself). She runs into Lachlan, who is the complete opposite of man she has ever met. He had so many strong character traits that were likely due to the loving home he was brought up in. His most endearing quality was a heart for those who couldn't fight for themselves and his one major flaw was some major trust issues (he had been burned in the past). Maggie hid her identity from Lachlan for more than halfway through the book and while that is something that typically annoys me it worked with their storyline. I typically like a little more heat in a Highland romance but it was still wonderful and I hope the follow up story is just as riveting.

The Reckless Love of an Hier by Jane Lark
4 star review
This is the first time I have read this author and I was in for a pleasant surprise. I had some reviews of her other books and a common remark was the storied had a "real" feel to them. I completely agree. The story was more than a romance. It was filled will heartfelt relationships beyond the two main characters. It wove in family dynamics, disappointments, tragedy and love. It was low on heat but high on sentiment. I will read more from Jane Lark.

The Earl's Wager by Rebecca Thomas
3 1/2 star review
This was a cute book with characters that are easy to root for. Despite a bad first impression Will and Georgia quickly started to appreciate each other's personality. They were a great match. I would have liked a little more depth in their back story (Georgia's family and losing her mother and Will being turned on by the ton). Other than that it was a feel-good quick read.

Too Wicked to Kiss by Erica Ridley
2 star review
This felt more of a "Who done it" book with a romance kicked in. I was so focused on the motives of all the characters (and there were a lot to keep up with) reasons to commit a crime that I missed the connection between Evangeline and Gavin. The epilogue while nice didn't connect to the book and felt like I was reading about a couple I hadn't met before.

MacLean's Passion by Sharon Cullen
4 star review
The premise of this storyline intrigued me in its irony. Both Maggie and Colin were extremely strong in terms of their fighting ability yet it was aspects of their physical strength that caused them both to have insecurities regarding their capacity to be loved by other people. I though this was a brilliant twist that kept me reading to see how they would overcome this and see the gift they had in each other. While at times things might have dragged a bit, I was interested enough in both of their stores together and as individuals. I didn't get as much of Colin's backstory other than he was spoken of negatively by his family and he felt he was always off fighting instead of being there for them. Maggie's brother, Evan, may have loved her but he disappointed me in his lack of communicative abilities with Maggie and I was hoping his wife, Innis, would do a better job of smoothing things over but never met my expectations. They were both let down by those who should have loved them. Really the hero for me was Maggie because she not only had to find her worth but she had to convince Colin of his and also talk him into letting her fight for him and their future. She made the story for me.

The Duke of Daring by Darcy Burke
3 star review
Enjoyable read although I had a hard time getting past the Earl of Dartford, Andrew, getting hot and bothered over a short pudgy man with sideburns. Once the costume was gone I got more fully invested in the book and not so distracted by the set up. I liked Lucy and appreciate in a story when a heroine can admit her feelings to herself rather than spend most is the book denying them. Maybe it took a disguise for Lucy to sneak up on Andrew who closed off himself to the hurt of losing anyone he could grow to love. I think the author did a good job with Andrew's anxiety issues and didn't just put a bandaid on to fix his problems. There was a quick ending but there was also a good epilogue to make up for it.https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/30970765-the-reckless-love-of-an-heir

It was not easy getting through Liam's prologue or the opening scene with Mena, but through their anguishing start I was immediately pulled into the story of the Demon Highlander and Philomela Lockhart.  I won't lie, it was a very dark story but the author masterfully showed how these two characters brought healing to each other. I loved how safe Mena felt with the temperamental hero and absolutely enjoyed seeing Liam fall so fast. There was one moment when he showed some doubt towards her which bothered me but he more than made up for it a bit later. The brutality that both characters faced in life led to the most justified ending. Gripping, dark and yet a beautiful romance!

Once Upon a Moonlit Night (Maiden Lane 10.5) by Elizabeth Hoyt
5 star rating (novella category)
The perfect novella. Hippolyta Royle has just escaped from the Duke of Montgomery's forced attempt to compromise her into becoming his wife. Disheveled she comes across the carriage of Matthew Mortimer who reluctantly whisks her inside and a delightful romance filled with humor and sensuality begins. I love these two together. Hippolyta trying to convince Matthew that she is an heiress and he hiding the fact he is the Earl of Paxton. Though brief, I thoroughly enjoyed the delightful trip back the Maiden Lane series.

Angel in Scarlet by Lavinia Kent
1 star rating
I just never could get into this book. It was so choppy, feelings were never explained, the dilemma element was never flushed out. It was simply frustrating! Was Angela ever looking to get even with Colton and did he feel anything for her before calling things off? If so, neither character was believable. I was disappointed since the first 3 books in the series were better developed.

Seduced (Wicked Woodley's #4) by Jess Michaels
From the moment he was introduced as Warrick's older brother in the previous book, Ruined, I have been looking forward to the story of Captain Jack. Taking on a life of crime to care for his brother, he became king of the underworld who happened to have a huge heart. From the moment he was confronted by Letty (who thought he was enticing her brother Griffin to follow his notorious lifestyle) he was the one seduced. Soon Letitia saw the true heart of Jack and quickly confided her own struggles in life that led to low self esteem and self doubt. If not for their stations in life they were the same side to a coin - fighters and defenders of those they loved even it it caused them a lifetime of pain. In finding each other the pain was able to heal and their loved restored hurts of the past.
Enjoyable characters, steamy romance, great story-line time and time again from Jess Michaels.

The Wedding Affair by Heather Boyd
I was into this story enough to want to reach through the pages and shake Felix and tell him to move onward and upward from Sally. She must have been a catch 6 years prior but time turned her into someone who held on to a grudge no matter what. I don't understand why Felix spent so much time groveling when I never felt it was really explained how he hurt her in the first place. Even once the misunderstanding of his ambition was explained (not very well explained at that) Sally chose to still be bitter for no other reason than why stop being bitter when that's all she knows how to be towards the hero? I liked Felix' s character but I wish he was paired with someone else or the heroine was written less spoiled.

Lana and the Laird by Sabrina York
4 Star Review
I have been anticipating the story of the Duke of Caithness since book one of this trilogy. The story of the three sisters take place at parallel times so the reader gets bits and pieces of Lana and Lachlan's love story before this novel even begins. I didn't know how the author would retell it in s way to hold my interest but with a great mystery and the paranormal aspect (which I typically don't enjoy) this held my interest the whole way through. I love how Lachlan transforms from a lace wearing Duke to Highland warrior to gain favor in Lana's eyes. When she asked him what he slept in had me rolling with laughter. The epilogue was a nice cap to the series as well.

A Pledge of Passion by Victoria Vane
2 Star Review
I enjoyed the first book in the series but this second installment didn't capture as much of my attention. As a stand-alone it would have been confusing as it relied heavily on the character descriptions from the previous novella.  The conflict resolution was too swift and I never fully believed or understood the conflict to begin with.

The Untamed Earl by Valerie Bowman
3 Star Review
The opening scene of a young Alexandra looking out her bedroom to see the future man of her dreams coming to the rescue of her brother and friend was very heartwarming. Three years later her crush on Owen is just as strong and she is determined to get her man. I loved that she was not a pushover and didn't back down from her youthful goal. Owen saw this in her from the get go was taken with her.
A drawback for me was that I never got the discord between Owen and his father. It was resolved rather easily for such a buildup.  The villainous sister was also a bit over the top for me, especially the hissy fit she threw over not getting her way.

4 Star Review
I think I will enjoy this series after having some misgivings from the first in the series that set up the feud between these two families. Chance and Tempest were drawn to each other before knowing their families were bitter enemies.  Neither knew the circumstances of the rift and despite their better judgement kept meeting in secret until they fell in love.  Circumstances led to the details coming out and my only disappointment was the villain seeming to get off easy again. The other characters that were introduced were very charming and I am looking forward to their stories. I would like to have had an epilogue or at least hope that at some point Lord Norgrave will get his due.

The Wayward One Danelle Harmon
5 Star Review
I had waited a long time for the final book in the De Montefortes series and often when this happens it winds up being an utter let down but not this time. I love these siblings and was so happy Lucien played a major role. The biggest opponent he faced was his youngest sister, Nerissa. She proved herself worthy of the Dr Montfortes name and couldn't have been in better hands than with her captor/captain/champion, Ruaidri.
The story spanned from London to Boston and was a beautifully written adventure. I really never had the feeling that Nerissa was spoiled, I could tell her strong spirit from the get go. No one could match her as well as Ruaidri. She needed someone as, if not, more stubborn than her.
I was disappointed that there was not an epilogue but not enough to take away from a 5 star review. I will put in a plug for a complete reunion epilogue though!

To Lure a Proper Lady Ashlyn Macnamara
4 1/2 Star Review
Well done Ashlyn Macnamara, you are consistent in the quality of your writing which makes for an easy auto buy! As always the characters are well developed. Their background, hang-ups and reasoning behind their actions are made clear yet concise.
Dysart was a hero through and through and Lizzy was a good fit for him although the only reason this book is rated as a 4 instead of 5 is that she even considered anyone other than him for a moment.

Three Weeks to Wed Ella Quinn
1 1/2 Star Review
I will preface this review by saying I hate the instant love/hurry to bed by the first chapter type of romances. This seems to be an easy way out of building a story. I never develop the need to know more about the characters when this is the plot line and it was exactly what happened in this case. Matt and Grace did nothing for me and didn't buy the angst of the story being the worry over her retaining guardianship of her siblings. It was a hurried start of a story and I was in as much of a rush to have it over with.

A Reckless Desire Isabella Bradford
4 Star Review
While this wasn't my favorite book of the series, Isabella Bradford still did an amazing job with the story of Rivers and Lucia. I was up all night reading because I can't resist a "My Fair Lady" story. It differed in that Lucia did not need much help and Rivers quickly realized what a gem he had. I loved when characters are flawed and River's botching up so many conversations with Lucia was one of them. Faster than in most books of this genre, the main characters confessed their love for each other. This made most of the story heart-wrenching but oh so lovely (hence staying up all night). The only draw back in this is I wish the epilogue (which was satisfying) was still a bit longer to counter all that time they didn't think their relationship could continue on a permanent level. Lovely!

A Most Delicate Pursuit by Pamela Labud
1 Star Review
There are too many holes in this story to be able to enjoy it. The pacing is all over the place, the characters change their feelings back and forth in a dime with no explanation of why. Because of all of these flaws I never felt any connection between Bea and Michael. This was a struggle to get through.

Amelia Grey Wedding Night with the Earl (#3)
3 1/2 star Review

By not delving into some details of Adam and Katharine's past this lost out on the potential to be a 5 star rating. I was so looking forward to Adam's story and in many aspects it didn't disappoint. He was a kind, loving man with that little bit of swagger that all hero's need but his back story that had been mentioned in the 2 previous books was simply glossed over. There was clearly sadness and pain when Adam lost his wife and child in labor but I was just told that by the author, I never felt it. On top of that the drama of his past was resolved simply with a 5 minute conversation with a midwife. I missed out on the who, what, when, where and how. I would have been fine with that if the same exact thing didn't happen with Katharine's past as well. These two were meant to be together to help one another overcome the tragic losses they faced in life but the tragedy but their past suffering never came to fruition so a big chuck of the story fell flat.
All that being said, I love this author and would read this book again and any subsequent books of hers, but my expectations of Adam's story must have too high to attain.

Jennifer Haymore Highland Awakening
4 star Review

I have found this to be a bit difficult to review. To start, I love Jennifer Haymore, she is an auto buy author for me. I also thought the heat level in this was smoking hot (in a good way). There were a few things though that had me really wavering on whether I grade on a curve or base it on the flaws I couldn't overlook.
I'm still deciding and by the end I hope to have my rating.
I loved the hero Cam but one of the first scenes is of him sneaking into Esme's room while she was sleeping which had me viewing him more in a creepiness light. It wasn't even an alpha male characteristic it was too 'stalkerish' for that. My guess is that it was added to show his fear of being like his father but that never materialized for me. From the first time they met I got the impression he was going to do anything to marry her and then there was one point where he wrestled with not being able to have forever with her due to his upbringing. Then in a flash he was back to orchestrating ways to have her as a wife. I never was sold on what was supposedly his major dilemma. Oh, but then there was the heat between these two (the heat, my god the heat) which I hate to admit more than made up for some negative elements. The last book in the series was titled Highland Heat but that was more appropriate for this one! I'll end on that note...4 stars.

Jane Goodger How to Please a Lady
3 Star Review

My favorite book from this author is the Mad Earl's Daughter.  I think part of my review is based on comparing this romance to that one.  The only thing I can pinpoint for my dissatisfaction was that the heroine Rose came off as extremely snobbish all the way to the end of the book.  I loved the set up and how the reader was introduced to the characters as they met again 5 years after escaping to America together.  We were then taken back to the set up of what led them on their journey.  This was a darker novel but so well written and full of depth.  I just feel that there had to be a way to justify how Rose came off as looking down on Charles (Charlie) Avery.  Blame it on her youth, the horrible things she had gone through in life, something.  Not only did I not get a reason for it, I never felt she ever saw Charlie as her equal.  It seemed he was always in the servant role to her, expected to satisfy her in every way.  There should have been more time (or any time) spent on her acknowledging how much Charlie accomplished but instead she continued to focus on herself (her horse Moonshine and being excited over her favorite flowers on all his designs).  This could have been so much better with just a few tweaks on Rose.

Amy Sandas Luck is No Lady
4 Star Review

Absolutely lovely!  Amy Sandas had won me over with her debut series and although this book was a departure in terms of the heat level, she more than made up for it in the romance between Emma, passionate bookkeeper by day, loyal family spinster by night and Roderick, the first gambling proprietor I have read about who was without the rakish characterization. There were so many subtle nuances of passion woven throughout the story (the simply tied cravat and the wager over the hands) that made this novel thoroughly enjoyable.
While I was eager to know the about the other characters future story lines, it did not detract from the hero and heroine (which happens often in the first book of a series). Yes, there were times where you had to suspend belief with situations that took place in this particular time period but isn't that what a romance novel is all about? Simply delightful.

January 2016 Netgalley Reviews

Kimberly Bell (Debut Author) A Convenient Engagement

3.5 star review

I am rating this a bit higher to take into account this is a debut author.  Let me begin by saying I will be reading whose ever story comes out next in a amazing array of side characters (Jane? Fiona? Ewan? Charles? Couseclay? Or dare I hope a combination of these?).  I actually enjoyed this story with only a few set backs here and there.  Where I would complain is in the disparaging feelings I ended up having for Gavan and Hannah.  In the beginning, Hannah was a strong and forthright woman and I loved this aspect of her character.  They way the two leads met was wonderfully clever.  The problem I had is as the story went on Gavan had so much growth and changed because of his love for Hannah whereas she just turned more and more selfish with not only taking Gavan's feelings into consideration,  but those she came to see as friends as well (Jane, Fiona and so on).  I needed to see more of a change in her before the last few pages in the book (and there was not an epilogue).  There was just too much time given to the negative qualities in the heroine without really delving in to what would make her behave as she did.  With all that being said this author showed extreme promise and I will no doubt be reading subsequent books in this series!

Jennifer Haymore An Affair in Autumn

3.5 star review (for a novella)

A review for all of the 'A Year Without a Duke' series will follow shortly but so far Jennifer Haymore's contribution to the series is the best by far.  I only am sad that another House of Trent story has been shortened to a novella.

Bianca Blythe How to Capture a Duke

3.5 star review

I do wish 1/2 stars were possible as this book did deserve higher than a 3. My overall description would be that this book was a charming read. I enjoyed how Percival and Fiona got to know each other while he thought she was a highwaywoman. The whole "I've been captured" announcements made whenever Percival got a chance being answered with "by Cupid's Bow no doubt" from passing crowds was hilarious! I had trouble with, after having strong feelings for one another, how quickly they thought the worst of each other with little evidence to go on. Even when they realized they were wrong in their judgements they still didn't seek each another out. While the separation set up the ending scenes it made me question their level of love and commitment. Yes, there were some flaws along the way but overall it was a good read by a new author.

Rachel Brimble Her One True Love

1 star review

If these two leads did anything other than lock eyes, gaze into each others eyes and/or refuse to look away from one another and actually have a conversation, this story may have worked (key word 'may'). By chapter two I was thinking no one would be comfortable being in a room with them with this stare down game.  I was too annoyed to be interested in the story which repeated the same sentiment over and over again...
Jane... "I must get away from Matthew", "I can't be with your Matthew", "Leave Matthew", "Stay Matthew", "No, I changed my mind again Matthew".
I was hoping Matthew might grow a brain and work it out with his estranged wife!  I still have no answers to when, why or how or even if they fell in love.  They may have said it but I didn't get them from what I read (of course it must have been in the way they looked at each other).  This story made be beyond frustrated (insert eye roll here).

Valerie Bowman TheUnforgettable Hero (novella)

4 star review (for a novella)

This was a very sweet story. Normally novellas have no backstory or development but this one provided just enough to make the story not feel forced or rushed.  Surprisingly what it showed more than anything was the love that Derek (The Duke from The Unexpected Duchess) had for his brother Adam/Peter. I also enjoyed the brief appearances of characters from other past books in the series.
Cecelia/Lady Magnolia was not was developed but part of that was due to the amnesia plot line. I really did enjoy her little sister Mary however and through her we get a better idea of who CeCe was.
Overall this was a very cute and refreshing novella.

Adrienne  Basso The Highlander Who Loved Me

2 Star review

This book seemed to be written in haste.  There were so many directions the plot could go and none were followed through with. There was no connection between the main characters other than them saying "I love you". Davina could have just flipped a coin between the two brothers and for a while I thought might actually happen. I hope Malcolm' s story gets more care.

Nicole Jordan TheArt of Taming a Rake

4 Star review

Book 4 in the Legendary Lovers series is more reminiscent of Nicole Jordan's earlier works such as the Notorious series (which was on of my favorites). It has the same instant connection between Quinn Traherne and Venetia Stratham. I liked that the misunderstanding of Quinn's character in the beginning of the story was quickly figured out by Venetia.  I don't like when an entire book is full of a misunderstanding that can be easily rectified. While I get the "we have to marry to protect your reputation" motif, this one seemed more forced and harder to believe than others I have read. Regardless of that, they were a couple who were perfect for each other and I enjoyed seeing them learn more about themselves after their hasty marriage and be each other's fiercest protector. I am now looking forward to the next book in this series!

Top 5 Historical Romance Authors

I have been reading my historical romance novels for a few years now so there are many I could review.  Before I start of my odd and end recommendations (both yea and nay ) I thought I would list my Top 5 of the authors you just can't go wrong with....

  1. Does anyone have any author in the number one spot other than Lisa Kleypas?  I have loved each and every series and am so glad she has returned to writing historical romance!
  2. Julia Quinn is my next favorite.  She still has not outdone her Bridgertons series but I would never skip anything she released.
  3. Tessa Dare is in contention for moving up to number one.  Once she gets a few more series under her wings you may see a number one spot in the near future.
  4. It will be an interesting contest for Tessa Dare to see if Sarah MacLean beats her take over that number one position.  They are both talented writers and are an auto buy for me.
  5. I was so happy to see this author release another historical romance series as she is overlooked on so many reviewer sites.  Tracy Anne Warren is amazing and I hope she receives the recognition she so rightly deserves.
